Solar for businesses works pretty much the same way as solar for private residences.

Typically, panels are put on the roof for either hot water or electricity. In both cases, the solar generally only supplies a fraction of what the business needs, because businesses use a lot of energy.

Retail stores have flat roofs, which is good for the cost of the building, but not as good for solar. Also, stores have more junk sticking up from the roof that could shade the panels.

A business is not eligible for the same federal tax credit that a home can get, but can deduct the panels as a capital expense (usually).

Most businesses want to see a big return on any money they invest, and solar doesn’t do that today. A few boutique stores like Whole Foods do it, and so do a few major corporations that want to make a statement, like Google.

Look up "solar energy" on Wikipedia for more.
