With all this talk of green living, what are countries doing to make war a greener exercise?

  1. They are using environmentally friendly tanks and vehicles and some of their submarines and aircraft carriers are actually powered by the clean green nuclear power, which is good to know so you can rest safely in the knowledge that wars are not polluting the environment like they used to.

some third world countries’ armies are using dry leaves for toilet paper.

At some level, I think the fear of radioactive contamination has motivated the big powers to use low-intensity warfare. Rather than leveling an entire city (which might, in some respects, be more efficient) there is an attempt to control the terrain gradually, killing only as necessary, avoiding lead and other poisons, especially anything toxic that would last.
This restraint is practiced mainly by those who have the greatest power to destroy the environment. Groups like Al Qaeda and Hamas refrain from environmental destruction mainly because they lack the means to cause it.
Ahmadinejad and the mullahs of Iran seem bent on acquiring the means to produce nuclear weapons, claiming they need the energy, in spite of the fact that they possess more petroleum and natural gas than almost anybody, and don’t own a refinery. I think the more recent generations, both in the West and elsewhere, lack appreciation of the destructive nature of nuclear weapons.
