American living in Ireland with a Green Card. If I apply for long-term residence, what are the benefits?

I know that I can apply for long-term residence when the two years are up for my Irish green card. I want to know what are the benefits of doing that. Can I move to another EU country and not need a new work permit? What are the benefits of long-term residence to me, other than entitling me to live in Ireland for a prolonged period? What do I need to do to be able to move freely within the EU?

  1. No you can’t move to other EU countries with an Irish green card. That is just for Ireland issued for Ireland alone. Remember your not an EU citizens so you cannot travel freely like other EU citizens. http://www.greencard.ie/ The Green Card rules where updated in 2007

    Residence and Naturalisation

If you don’t qualify to become a citizen by birth or marriage, you can still apply for naturalisation if you’ve lived in Ireland for 5 years. Examples of people who might benefit from such a situation would be those who have been working here over a long period of time using work permits, or non-Irish dependents of Irish citizens. Specific information, once again, is available at the Department of Justice

The following conditions must obtain before the Minister will confer citizenship on someone after meeting the residency requirements:

The applicant must be resident in the State
The applicant must be 18 years of age or older.
The applicant must have resided in the State for five of the nine years preceding the application. The last year of this period must have been one of continuous residence.
The applicant must satisfy the Minister that they are of good character.
The applicant must satisfy the Minister that they intend to reside in Ireland after naturalisation.
The applicant must make a formal declaration of fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the state.
Persons studying in Ireland may not make an application. Study periods DO NOT Count toward the five year reckonable residence requirement when applying for

  2. No, an Irish green card only allows you to live and work in Ireland indefinitely, not anywhere else in the EU. Only with a passport from an EU country can you freely live and work elsewhere in the EU. You would need to live in Ireland long enough to qualify for citizenship, then get an Irish passport before you could work in another EU country.
