I'm a legal permanent resident living in the USA. Can I renew my green card which has been expired for 2 years?

I’m living in the USA for over 20 years, but now, my green card has been expired for 2 years, because of a mistake. Can I still renew it?

Just like a US citizen continues to be a US citizen if his passport is expired, a LPR continues to be a resident even if his Green Card is expired. The document’s expiration does not effect the status itself.
Since it now costs $450 (gasp!) to file the I-90 for a new one, many residents choose not to renew their cards until they have no other choice. That’s usually only if you want to travel internationally. Even for job and thus I-9 purposes the driver’s license and unrestricted SS card suffices.

Hence, you don’t have a problem, you just need to bite the $450 every 10 years. If you are not from a country that does not allow dual citizenship, you might want to look into naturalization via form N-400. It currently costs $680 and that’s less than 2 new Green Cards cost.

  2. Yes, you can. Just because the card has expired, doesn’t mean your status has.

File an I-190 with the USCIS.
