  1. What would you put at the end of that pipe if you wanted to make pure distilled water? Thanks

  2. Dan, I was thinking that this would be a good segue into exploring pop-pop engine design. They’re not terribly efficient compared to Stirling engines, but they’re trivial to build and operate.

They’ve previously only been used in toys in the past, but with steam expulsion like what’s on this video, it looks like you can get an engine big enough to use on a small canoe fairly easily. I think it’d make a pretty neat, albeit useless, project purely for fun. Maybe a good competition idea!

  3. You could use copper for the receiver, circulate it slowly to create hot water or steam. Probably need several in series for steam production, but very possible. You could store hot water for use when the suns not shining.

  4. Help me see the uses. You could capture the steam from several tubes. Have a way to refill the tubs, check, pressure valve, etc. Duct them together to turn a turbine. From there you can charge DC, invert it and use it. You would not use glass. You would use another material for the vacuum tube. Durability, or maybe not.

Am I way off or on the right track? Are my principals correct? I do HVAC, and have been into passive and solar and several years. I have just found parabolic mirrors.

  5. this is good but i’m thinking about solar water heater here, this doesn’t come close. so it’s like, eh.

  6. NO idea. I don’t know the first thing about physics, that’s why I subscribe to channels like this.

I am with you on that…I am trying to figure out the same thing…Is it possible for this to work like a vaccum and pull the water up as it boils?

  8. I was thinking a low flow/volume pump to circulate the hot water through my black plastic pipe water heater. Then I could store some hot water in an old water heater tank. Or a “hot tub” type unit. The water coming out of the pipe is REALLY hot!
There are high volume pumps for pools, spas, etc but I need low volume pump.

I was just thinking – the pump should be gravity fed and should be before the mirror.

I had protective clothing on. It actually splashed me in the slow motion video at the end. These tubes have a habit of large steam bubbles.

  11. The expansion of hot air can turn a turbine or Stirling engine. A small electric fan may be able to work as a turbine.

  12. … unless of course your part of the world that enjoys hot water! 😛

  13. Honestly, how close did you come to scalding yourself during the making of this video, Dan? 😛 Great stuff. Very nice and straight forward variant of a thermal collector, easily tracked to with a single axis motor, set the cant for the season. Nice.
