Solar Farming in Africa: Green Electricity Powered by the Sun – iq2 Shorts

www.intelligencesquared.com In the fourth installment of our iq2 Shorts series, Professor Michael Düren of DESERTEC argues that we can harness the African desert sun to power the world. The animation is adapted from our Switched On evening ‘Energy Game Changers’ from March 2012. 1. This has to happen, but there are so many concerns. Particularly, energy supply security… Will consumer nations be held to ransom by terrorists or unscrupulous national governments with control over the supply? I guess that’s why there’s an emphasis on providing benefits to the African nations, but what a job!

  2. I believe AC was originally chosen because it is easier to transform low > high > low voltage for distribution and local consumption.

  3. Over longer distance HVDC is more efficient because it loses much less electricity than AC.

  4. wait i thought dc is less efficient then ac. isn’t it? that why we use ac then dc to power home.
