How can you make a "green" home in Kansas?

I’ve been watching a lot of shows about "green" houses (Renovation Nation, World’s Greenest Homes, etc) and it occurred to me that if and when my boyfriend decide to build a house, I’d love to make it as eco friendly as possible. I love the idea of lots of windows as ways to let in natural light as well as to keep a good airflow within the house. Unfortunately, with Kansas springs and summers, there are awful storms (high winds, hail) that could potentially damage many windows, and leaving them open would only invite insects of all sorts inside. So, how would you create a green home in Kansas that would maximize the natural elements (i.e. SUNLIGHT is huge) while minimizing potential damage?
