Is it true that you can apply for a green card after living legally in the US for more than 3 years?

A friend of mine from the UK told me that.
He is actually living in the US and he said he got a green card after living for three years on a student visa.
… and I think he told me a lie and he is living in the US illegally.

  1. i am a bit confused, you are legal if you have a student visa than you can apply for a green card which takes anytine from one year to three depending how back up they are and unless the law has chanced that is what happens.
also when you get your green card and decide to become a citizen you have stay in the states for three years whitout traveling unless in case of emergency
so the bottom line is your friend is not ilegal if hwe was under a student visa and you dont have to wait to apply for a gren card but you do have to wait for it liked I said anytine from one to three years.

  2. Student visas are not an immigration-class visa, and foreign students, as a condition of their visa, are required to go home upon completion/termination of studies.

That said, it does not mean that students do go home upon completion of studies as they are supposed to. A substantial number of them find ways around the requirements and remain.

I would not believe someone got a green card after 3 years on a student visa, but I certainly would believe he is gaming the system one way or another.

  3. You can apply for anything in the USA. That’s the great thing about living here. All applications are accepted. I hear it on the radio every day.

File Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status)

Please understand, just because you apply does not mean the application will be approved. In fact, I’d be shocked if it was.

  4. No one gets a green card simply for living in the US legally as a student for 3 years. period. however, if he managed to qualify for a green card in some other manner then maybe he did get one in 3 years while here as a student.
