Particularly home built or inexpensive solar energy. I’m looking for something that will explain the entire process. Many books I have found assume previous knowledge of the subject and usually end with me Googling for a couple hours. Thanks!

Be careful with buying plans on the internet for making your own solar panels. Most of the sites are not much more than a scam.
Be aware that you won’t be able to use homemade solar panels for other than a small standalone system. They will not be permitted to be connected to the electric grid. To get any significant power to make a difference, you need decent size system, preferably grid tied, with UL Listed (factory made) panels.
The price of panels has come down so much in the past 2 years, it’s really not cost effective to make your own. There’s no way you’ll be able to make them water tight enough to withstand 40 years of being outside. You may be penny wise, pound foolish.
An excellent book about solar electric systems is Photovoltaics: Design & Install Manual by SEI. http://www.altestore.com/store/Books-Classes-Educational-Videos/Solar-Electric-PV/Photovoltaics-Design-Install-Manual/p481/. It will teach you how to design a code compliant solar system, not how to make your own panels.
Sorry. I do not know about a book on the the topic, but i got information from Wikipedia and ArosaEnergy. you can get information and questions answered.
take your pick!
