Why get a liscense?I plan on being green living in the city and using public transportation or friends. Why am?

I plan on being green living in the city and using public transportation or friends. Why am I being pressured to get one? I don’t even have my own car

And things do not always go as planned. There may come a time when you have to drive so it would be nice to do it legally.

Before I had a car, I often went to visit old friends from the neighborhood. I come home at night, I waited 10 minutes by train, the train drove for 10 minutes, got to wait 10 minutes by bus, drove a bus for 20 minutes and then walked for 20 minutes. Total time of one hour and 10 licenses minutes.Having would also be useful if you ever want to travel and rent a car because you have no friends where you least going. At obtain an ID status. Everyone should have a valid ID with photo and a passport is a bit ‘bulky to carry around. Even if you have a school ID if you are over 16 (in most states) it’s time you had a state ID. In fact, you should know how to drive a car and have permission to do so.

  2. Don’t get a license then. There is no law that you must have one. I’ve known many people that have never got their drivers license, and they do just fine.

But, you should at least get a state issued ID card. There are a lot of things that you need a government issued photo ID for that do not involve driving. This can be used in place of a drivers license for everything that requires one, except driving.

<aside> My question back to you now is just how "green" do you plan on living? It is impossible to be 100% "green" Public transportation emits gases and pollutants. The production of the building you live in and the food you eat produce gases and pollutants that are not good for the environment. Even the clothes you wear did some harm to the environment in the manufacturing of them. And let’s not forget that if you plan on having hot water or a computer, cell phone, TV, or other electronic device, you will have a "carbon footprint".

You don’t need to get a license. But you’ll want to get at least an ID.

Having a license would also be convenient if you ever travel and want to rent a car since you might not have friends where you’re going.

To get home at night, I waited 10 minutes for a train, rode the train 10 minutes, got off and waited 10 minutes for a bus, rode the bus 20 minutes and then walked 20 minutes. Total time one hour and 10 minutes, and in winter it got pretty cold at the bus stop. I got a car and the trip took 15 minutes.

  5. The idea is nice, but green living doesnt always work out.

Also a lot of employers demand proof of "reliable transportation" and not all of them will accept public transportation (buses and trains can and ARE late regularly)

They will never ask to see your car, but they do sometimes ask to see your drivers license.

I dont mean to doubt you, but coming from someone who’s wife was dead set on going Vegan

Give it 6 months. Your plan will most likely go right out the window after you realize public transportation is the scourge of urban living

Ignore them if you don’t want a license. If it serves no purpose you should not bother.

  7. At least get a State ID. Everyone should have a valid form of photo identification, and a passport is a bit bulky to carry around. Even if you have a school ID, if you are over 16 (in most states) it’s time you had a State ID. In reality, you should know how to drive a car and be licensed to do so.
At some point in an emergency you may need to. And at some point people will get tired of helping you out, unless of course you plan to pay them for their services… which you should!!

  8. Because every time you get a lift with someone, like your mother or your friends.. you are pissing them off with all your green talk. It’s easy to talk about being green and how you don’t need a car when you have your own personal taxi service.

  9. A license is good to have 1, for identification and 2, in the event there’s an emergency and you need to drive someone someplace, like the hospital.
It’s not a bad skill to have even though you plan on going green.

  10. You need a form of Identification. So you’re going to have to make a trip to the DMV anyway to get either an ID card or drivers license.

And things don’t always go to plan. There may come a time when you have to drive so it would be nice to do so legally.

You and your friend want to go on a long distance road trip. I’m sure your friend would like to be able to share the driving duties.

You and your friend go out to a bar. She gets drunk. If you have a license, you can take the keys and drive home.

What if you end up with a job that moves you to a city that does not have a well developed public transportation system?

It’s your choice to get one or not. But it will make your life a bit easier if you do. It will allow you to adapt quickly to changes in your environment and situation.
