Can I apply for a green card if I have been living in the USA for five years and pursuing a masters degree?

I am on a F-1 visa, I have been in the USA for 3 years now, I have already completed my Bachelors Degree and also my OPT. I am now goning to Graduate school. Is it possible for me to apply for a green card when I finish doing my Masters Degree?

  1. You can apply any time. It’s best to apply while visa is still in effect than wait till you become illegal. Then you may get deported.

  2. You can’t file for a green card directly based on your masters degree, but you might qualify for an H1b work petition based on your advanced degree and in that way qualify eventually for a green card. There are additional H1b visas available for graduates of US graduate schools.
